What a Mighty God We Serve!

After church today, Neal and I met with Pastor Joel for him to anoint and pray over me. We talked for a while about what all is currently going on with me. In a nutshell, my right vocal cord is paralyzed, making it very difficult to talk, swallow, and I get choked a lot since the cord doesn't work well enough to help with swallowing; the tinnitus in my right ear is deafening, literally--it's often so loud that I can't hear well, even with my new, wonderful hearing aids; and my brain tumor is still there, although it is shrinking, praise God. After giving him the lowdown, he put some healing oil on Neal's fingers, Neal anointed my neck, we held hands, and Joel prayed.

I felt like I had a Pentecost moment. (We studied this in Acts 2 today, so it's fresh on my mind.) While he was praying, I could feel something happening inside my head. After he finished praying, I kept feeling it for another few minutes. Wouldn't it be cool if God showed up and showed out? Only time will tell. I have an MRI on October 27 and will find out then what's going on with the tumor. It would be REALLY nice if they said, "tumor? What tumor?"

My God is Jehovah-Rapha, the God Who heals. As far as I'm concerned, I'm already healed by the Blood of the Lamb. He healed me on that cross when He died and took all my sins onto His sinless Body so I could be set FREE! I don't know if my body is healed now, but I know that because of Him, it will be one Day. What a mighty God we serve!

What a mighty God we serve!
What a mighty God we serve!
Angels bow before Him,
Heaven and earth adore Him,
What a mighty God we serve!

Take My Hand, Precious Lord

I am blessed to be able to co-lead a discipleship group of teen girls. We study the Word, do HEAR journals, and basically share life together. I've really grown to love these girls and am quite thankful for the opportunity to lead them (and for my amazing co-leader!). (HEAR is an acronym for Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond.) I wanted to post the one I wrote yesterday.

I'm Yours

How could I forget this? 😲

If you've known me for any length of time, you know that I've experienced excruciating, often debilitating headaches for decades, since 1982 actually. Well, I started seeing a new neuro-ophthalmologist last summer (May 7, 2025). My previous doctor retired several years ago, and I had not seen one in a while. I had become quite discouraged because no help for my headaches had been offered so I kinda gave up. Since I needed an eye exam anyway, I thought I'd find one here in Huntsville/Madison. Enter Dr. Solomon. I explained my headaches to him. He prescribed two different medications--one to stabilize the CSF in my brain (since my headaches often shift from side to side based on the side upon which I'm lying) to be taken daily, and one to take as needed. After seeing him, I woke up with a bad headache the following morning. I had taken the daily one the night before so I took the other one. IT WAS GONE WITHIN ABOUT 30 MINUTES!!! You don't know what a miracle this was! I had been living with these headaches for 43 long years! I had come to believe it was a sentence I just had to grin and bear! Since that time, I have only had a few really bad ones (none debilitating), and only because he experimented with the medication because of some other issues I was having. THANK YOU GOD!!!🙌🙌🙌

But wait, there's more! I went to the ENT today because of the loss of hearing in my right ear and the extreme tinnitus that resulted from March's radiosurgeries. They are looking into fitting me for a hearing device that should help with not only the hearing but also with the tinnitus! Is God good or what??? And Neal? He just sits in the corner beaming while the ENT talks about how the device works and how the audiologists will work to get the cost down. He loves me so much I think he'd take out a 2nd mortgage if necessary to help me. How did I deserve him? God knew that he's just the man I need for such a time as this.

I'M YOURS

How can I ever praise You enough?

You carry me through the highs and the lows

Through the darkness and the shadows.

All of my life I have been ever dependent on You,

I just haven’t always realized it.

You’ve been there through it all with me.

I could never begin to repay You

So there’s no point in even trying.

How can one repay the Creator and Owner of all things?

It’s simply impossible.

So, I will offer all I have.

My life, my all.

I’m Yours.

For Such a Time As This

God is so amazing! It's been SO long since I wrote a blog entry. Much has happened. I've had ups and downs, but through it all God has been right there with me like He always has been.

Last summer around June 2025, I lost my voice again. Some of you may recall that I lost it in 2010 for about two years. That's when I sported a headset for a while so people could hear me, especially when I was teaching. Some of the high schoolers at church even hinted at jazzing it up so I'd mimic Brittney Spears.😄 Well, God was gracious and gave me my voice back. He tends to work wonders like that. After I lost it again, I went to an ENT who sent me to a specialist at Vanderbilt. She has done a gel injection in my paralyzed vocal cord twice and may do surgery on it in the December or January timeframe if it doesn't improve. She's done surgery on several country music singers. So, hey! There may be hope for me yet! 😂 Please pray God will give my voice back to me again!

Another issue I've had is swallowing. Since vocal cords assist with swallowing and one of mine is paralyzed, I've had a lot of problems with choking, so the ENT also sent me to a gastroenterologist. He decided to do an endoscopy to stretch my esophagus. He could have done it in his office; however, because of the paralyzed vocal cord and the fact that I have Chiari (which opens a whole different can of worms), he needed to do it in the hospital in case I stopped breathing. I'm quite happy he took that under consideration! When he did the endoscopy, he was quite surprised at his discovery. I had a lot of damage from acid reflux. What?! I didn't even know I had acid reflux! So, he had to do damage control as well as stretch the esophagus. I've had three endoscopies now, the most recent was yesterday (7/30).

Trudging right along, last fall I was hit out of the blue with an MRI that showed a possible new brain tumor. It had been ten years since the original brain metastasis, so this was quite unexpected. The doctor was perplexed as well. Test after test was conducted, but it was not showing any correlation to the original breast cancer. This was even more perplexing. Since another MRI showed growth, after consulting with a team of doctors, Dr. Boggs decided to do radiosurgery again. However, this time, there would be five radiosurgeries performed back-to-back, one daily. This was NOT fun. It was done in early March. Dr. Boggs told me one of the side effects is hearing loss since the tumor is located behind my right ear. Well, not only have I lost most of the hearing in that ear, but I also have really bad tinnitus. It's loud, high pitched, and sometimes painful. He said it might go away, but at this point, it's not looking good. However, the EXTREMELY good news is that the MRI I had Tuesday (7/28) showed the tumor is still shrinking! Still you say? Yes, still! The first follow-up MRI in April showed it was already shrinking! 💃💃💃 God is so good!!!🙌🙌🙌

Continuing the saga, last month I had a teeth cleaning. The dentist did x-rays and one of the back molars showed significant bone loss due to all the chemo I've had. She said that if it became painful to let her know because it might become infected. A couple of weeks ago, I started getting a persistent toothache, so I went back to her last week. She sent me to a specialist Wednesday (7/29) who sent me to a specialist that day who said the tooth is cracked and needs to be extracted. The good news? I get a bright, shiny new tooth!

What a fun-filled week I've had! MRI, CT scans and two doctor appointments Tuesday, a periodontist with x-rays and an endodontist with x-rays and a CT scan Wednesday, and an endoscopy in the hospital Thursday! But I am so blessed! If I had not been born at this time, all this medical technology would not be available and I might not be here. God is so good and has placed me exactly where I need to be for such a time as this.

Another amazing thing that happened? Neal and I celebrated 40 years of marriage! He's been with me through it all. I could never have asked for a better husband from my precious Lord. He truly demonstrates Ephesians 5:25, "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her." But as much as Neal loves me, Jesus loves me so much more.

I will praise Him for His excellent greatness,

For His steadfast love endures forever!

I will sing of His mercies every morning,

For His steadfast love endures forever!

Thank You LORD for standing by me,

For His steadfast love endures forever!

Thorns and Roses

June 25, 1998, I had my initial cancer surgery. June 25, 2010, my doctors were concerned the cancer had metastasized after seeing the CT & PET scans. June 25, 2024, my appointments were extended from 3 months to every 4-6 months since I'm doing so well without chemo. I truly believe God has healed me of metastatic breast cancer that had metastasized to the bone, lung, and brain.🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Metastatic breast cancer just doesn't go away on its own. It's considered terminal, especially when it metastasizes to the brain. But my God is much bigger than cancer. He created the universe. He can do all things. He is Jehovah Rapha, the God Who heals. Why did He heal me and not others? I have no idea, but I will praise His Name from the mountaintops and tell everyone He healed me from cancer!

June 25, 1988, I had my 1st Chiari surgery. I'm not healed from that. It still causes EXTREME headaches. I have one today. It isn't extreme, but it's certainly bad enough. Why hasn't He healed me from Chiari? I have no idea, but I will still praise Him. I consider it my thorn in the flesh.

‭Consider 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. The apostle Paul is speaking.

"So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (Emphasis mine.)

He is also El Roi, the God Who sees. He sees us. He knows everything about us. This world is a mess because of the choices we have made. All choices that each person makes effects the rest of the world. We're all a mess, so the world is a mess. Don't ever think you haven't done anything to deserve what befalls you. Yes, you have. You mess up everyday; I mess up everyday; the entire world messes up everyday; we're one big mess; but one day God will get rid of all those thorns and create a beautiful rose bush. If we accept the thorns along the way and submit to the One Who created all things, we'll be part of that beautiful rose bush. His grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in our weaknesses. I pray you experience His grace and His power. I certainly have! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever!

How do I even begin? I am so thankful! God is AMAZING! Once again, my MRI and CT scans are stable. Since they've been stable for so long, my doctor decided to take me off the chemo pills! This just doesn't happen with brain cancer. He is obviously not through with me yet!

HIS STEADFAST LOVE ENDURES FOREVER

Oh praise the Lord for He is good!

His steadfast love endures forever.

I will shout from the hilltops because

His steadfast love endures forever!

I am forever thankful for all He has done.

His steadfast love endures forever.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

His steadfast love endures forever!

Beyond Joyful

God, the Maker of all things from the smallest quark to the largest galaxy, loves me (Genesis 1:31; John 3:16-17). That in itself blows my mind. He cares about all the details of my life. This absolutely amazes me. How can that even be possible? He has such large things to manage. The very existence of time is in His control because He is outside of time. He knows all things from the beginning to the end (Isaiah 46:9-10; Revelation 21:6). He knows the choices that I will make tomorrow, whether good or bad, and He will make those choices work out for good (Romans 3:38). How? I have no idea. If I understood everything that He does, He wouldn't be much of a God, would He? I only know that I am extremely thankful for Him and the love and grace He has shown me.

So here is the news of today, concerning the MRI and doctor appointments. I am beyond joyful! My MRI was stable and it has been for a while. I asked my doctor what this meant since my brain tumors have been stable for so long. He said it's probably just scar tissue. I asked him if that meant the tumors were gone. He said probably so! That just doesn't happen with brain cancer! PRAISE GOD THROUGH WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!!! When he left the room, I literally broke down, cried, and couldn't praise God enough! I am truly a walking miracle!!

We also discussed whether I should stop chemo treatments. He said we could, but it might come back. My breast cancer doctor agreed. Since I don't have major side effects from the chemo, we decided that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" So I will continue taking chemo pills, but I won't be as concerned when I forget to take a dose. God is SO good!!

So for now, I can plan for the future. I haven't felt like I can really do that in a long time. Will those plans come to fruition? Maybe not, but I can dream again. So look out! Who knows what I'll be up to! But whatever it is, I will glorify Him. THANK YOU LORD JESUS!!!

"And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day." ~ Genesis 1:31

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him." ~ John 3:16-17

"Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose." ~ Isaiah 46:9-10

'And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.' ~ Revelation 21:6

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose." ~ Romans 8:28

Tired, but Joyful! 🙌🙌

Reminders

This time of year can be quite challenging. I like the fact that Facebook keeps up with your memories from previous years' posts, but it is also a tough reminder at times. June marks 12 years since my cancer journey reignited, 24 years since the cancer journey began, and 34 years since my first Chiari surgery. But through it all, God has been with me every step of the way. He has been my constant companion, even in the hardest of times. I'm reminded of how even Elijah wanted the Lord to take his life at one point, but God reminded Him that He wasn't through with him yet. His story wasn't complete, and mine isn't either. As long as there is breath in my lungs, He will use me in some way and I will use that breath to glorify Him. As 139:14 states, "I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."

Today's Facebook memory from June 29, 2010

I wanted to update you concerning my doctor appointment. After examining the PET/CT scans, the doctor feels that my cancer has probably returned. I'm going to be admitted to UAB today so they can do a biopsy and figure out what's going on with my throat and everything else. Please join me as I pray. My God is good, and He will bring me through anything and everything.

Thankful

Wow. It has been a REALLY long time since I posted! So much has changed! We lived through a pandemic (well, almost), my grandchildren are much bigger, Lucy started and completed Kindergarten, Linda passed away--unbelievable! I just haven't felt like writing. I'm still having lots of pain. Much of it is the terrible headaches I have, but I also have a lot of back pain now. But my scans are still good. One of my doctors even said I'm doing "weirdly well"--my first official weird diagnosis!

Because of the pandemic, I've been able to do telehealth visits with my doctors. I've had my scans done here in Huntsville and then zoom with them. However, I had my first visit with my breast cancer doctor in February and will have one with my brain cancer doctor in October. They're both so amazed at how well I'm doing. However, I know why I am--it's because of the Great I AM!! For some reason, He is still using me. Only He knows my expiration date. When it's time for me to go Home, that's when I'll go! And I can't wait to bow at His Feet. Can you just imagine? Wow!

I really don't have much to say. God is good, and I am still here. So thankful for His goodness!

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under Heaven." ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1

38 Years

Thirty-eight years. That's how long it's been since I had an accident that brought my Chiari symptoms to the forefront. No, the accident did not cause the Chiari; the problem had been there since birth—I just didn't know about it. Because Chiari was relatively new and most doctors didn't even know about it at the time, no one could figure out what was going on. Actually, any doctor I saw thought it was "all in my head." (They really didn't know how accurate that was!)

The Arnold-Chiari Malformation that I have is due to my cerebellum being too far down and reaching into my spinal cord. The cord puts pressure on my brain, causing headaches, double vision, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, neck pain, unsteady gait, weakness, and ringing in my ears. My symptoms began in 1982 as headaches. Other symptoms started appearing a few months later. I went to several different eye doctors and told them about the double vision. At the time, the double vision would mainly occur when I was under a lot of stress. Since you can't schedule stress, they couldn't see it and really didn't believe me. That is, until late 1987 when I was doing my student teaching. I had an eye appointment after an especially stressful day at school. The double vision was so bad that I had to cover one eye to drive. And yes, the doctor finally saw it. He sent me to a neuro-ophthalmologist at UAB. He just "happened" to be doing research on Chiari, so he recognized it immediately. I felt so vindicated! At the time, I was only the 2nd known case in the USA. He sent me to Johns Hopkins for a 2nd opinion. Upon returning, I had surgery to remove a quarter size piece of skull tissue in the back of my head, along with the backs of the top 3 vertebrae to alleviate pressure on my brain. It helped, but I was never asymptomatic. The symptoms began to return, and I had another surgery in 2001. Again, it helped but didn't completely correct the problem. I still have tons of headaches (of course, brain cancer attributes to that too), double vision, and dizziness. I take medication that really helps with the double vision, so that's not really an issue any more.

Thirty-eight years is a long time. I'm tired and just want to go Home. I have headaches every day, but I'd been blessed to have a few weeks of minor headaches. However, that changed Monday. Today is Wednesday, and I've had a really, really bad headache since then. A headache this bad often lasts a week or more. I really covet your prayers. Please enter His Throneroom on my behalf and ask for relief. The pain, along with grieving for my Mama, is relentless. Maybe He's waiting on an army of prayer warriors to intercede along with Him. Please join the troops. I would appreciate it immensely.

Opposite Day

Have you ever played the opposite game? I remember my kids playing it with me. It could get confusing and hilarious all at the same time. Their "yes" became "no" and their "no" became "yes." They almost got in trouble a few times but would yell "Opposite day!"

Well, that's how it is with Christ. The very thing the world expects becomes the opposite. I know you've seen stories of parents forgiving their child's murderer. Pope John Paul II not only forgave his would be assassin (attempted in 1981), but they became friends. After the Pope died in 2005, his attacker truly mourned his death. That's what we do as Christians--the very opposite of what the world expects. Not because of us, but because Jesus did the opposite of what anyone expected. Instead of a crown of gold, He wore a crown of thorns. Not what you would expect from a king. But that's exactly what He is--our King. He died so we could live. The cross was actually His coronation ceremony. How opposite is that!

Sit back, close your eyes, and listen to this song. You certainly have time.

Under the Shelter of His Wings

Wow. I didn't realize it had been so long since I wrote an entry until someone asked me to share my blog with them. For those of you who aren't on Facebook, my apologies!

So much has happened since last summer, which was my last post. We are currently facing a world-wide pandemic that has most of us stuck at home. Honestly, this is how my life is most of the time. I do miss my church family, my kids, and my grandbabies. Peter was born in January and has grown so much already. Yes, we can facetime, but it's definitely not the same. I need to hold him and play with Lucy! Lucy is at such a fun age. We do all kinds of pretend when we're together. Oh, how I miss them! Oh, but I do miss you too David and Rachel. You're kind of special too. 😉

My health is unchanged. I'm still the miracle my doctor said I was! I still have good days and bad days. There are days when the only thing that reminds me that I have cancer is the lack of energy. Sometimes, I feel really good and will do WAY too many things at home. When I do, I'm quickly reminded that I shouldn't be doing that. Oh the fatigue that sets in! Other time, I'm in such pain that I really wish God would just take me Home. Those are days when I don't see a purpose in my continual existence. No worries though. God reminds me that He isn't finished with me yet. Nevertheless, when those thoughts and feelings enter my messed up brain, they are very real. Satan is quite diligent in focusing on making me feel insignificant. But then God... Don't you just love that! The word "but" can be a very loving word!

Today is a good day. I'm experiencing a lot of pain in my neck (no anecdotes, please!🤣), but it isn't excruciating like it so often is. He has me under the shelter of His Wings.

He has us ALL under the shelter of His Wings. Yes, COVID-19 has changed our world, possibly forever. The good news is that He has gotten our attention. So many Christians are being His Hands and Feet. The stories we've seen and experienced have His love written all over them. Who would have thought that an MSNBC anchor would ask a pastor on national TV to pray for us all? Who would have thought that America could ever be basically shut down but so many acts of kindness would occur during the midst of it all? I know Who. The One Who wrote the greatest love story and history book of all time. The One Who loves us even when we're at our absolute worst. The One Who forgives us for even the most heinous of atrocities, if we only ask. The One Who took it all on Himself so we wouldn't have to endure the punishment we so rightly deserve. Do you know this One? Do you know my Jesus? He came as a Baby, but He will soon return as a Conqueror. He will destroy all sin--none of it will be left, including those of us who refuse to turn to Him for forgiveness. Which side will you be on? The Conqueror or the conquered?

"But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
~ Joshua 28:15 [emphasis mine]

One more thing. If you haven't read Revelation, read it. If you need help reading it or have questions, ask. I've taught it in my small group for several years but definitely have a lot to learn. One good commentary I've found is on the Through the Word app. Chapter 18 is like reading current events. If you read it and don't see how it's so relevant, ask. It can be a very challenging book to read and understand, but it's oh so worth it. He's coming soon. Are you ready?

My Sweet Mama

My sweet Mama. Oh, how I miss you already! Your love, hugs, sense of humor, and oh what an infectious smile! One thing people would generally say about you was how beautiful your smile was. And your home-cooked meals! Simply nothing like them! No matter how hard I try, I can never replicate those dinners! I could go on and on with the love I have for you. Thankfully, you knew that. Sometimes, when I told you I loved you, you'd say, "no kidding!" I'm just so blessed to know that you are no longer trapped by your body. No more lying in bed, continually staring at the ceiling. Run to Jesus Mama! Say hi to Daddy, Barbara, Ronald, Martin, Mark, Mother and Daddy Vice, and all our family for us. We'll see you soon!

April 21, 2010
went to an ENT today concerning my voice. I can barely talk. He thinks my vocal cords have been strained due to the fact that I was really sick in March. I'm going for tests Monday.

April 26, 2010
had some tests done at the ENT's office. My right vocal cord has had some nerve damage. The left one is compensating, causing my voice to get weaker throughout the day. My doctor said this could last for 6 months or be permanent. Next Thursday, he's going to inject a gel into my vocal cord that should temporarily help and I'll have to repeat every 3 months. He'll have to do something else if this is permanent.

  Added comment after others questioned:
I've got to have more tests. So far, praise God, the results have been normal. But because of the problems I've been having, my oncologist wants to send me for a PET/CT scan Thursday. I also visit a neurologist tomorrow for his opinion. My ENT thinks the neurologist might want to do a CT scan on the right side of my head/neck. And you know how doctors casually mention possible things that could be wrong and that gets stuck in your head. I know that's just the devil messing with my mind.  I'm just tired of all of it and would like to enjoy my summer. It's easy to get down, but the prayers sent up by my friends have made it better. He definitely listens to you guys! And thanks Sherry. I'm kinda proud of those guys! You know how that is!

June 25, 2010
I just returned from my oncologist with the results of my PET/CT scan. There is an abnormality in my left lung and one near my tail bone. I'm having a biopsy Monday at 3:20 in Huntsville to determine whether or not it is cancer. Whatever the outcome, pray most that my response and attitude will glorify God.

June 29, 2010
I wanted to update you concerning my doctor appointment. After examining the PET/CT scans, the doctor feels that my cancer has probably returned. I'm going to be admitted to UAB today so they can do a biopsy and figure out what's going on with my throat and everything else. Please join me as I pray. My God is good, and He will bring me through anything and everything.

July 2 2010
Thank you for your prayers. A CT scan showed abnormalities in my lungs, armpits, and  liver. Doctors wanted to do a biopsy that was least invasive so it took a while to determine where to do it. They were going to do it today, but too many others were scheduled. They sent me home so I wouldn't have to wait over the long weekend. It's scheduled for next Thursday. That just gives everyone more time to pray!

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." --Jesus-Acts 1:8--The Cave Spring youth went to MFuge this week. Be His!

"I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation." ~ Isaiah 12:2

July 9, 2010
The doctors at UAB are very concerned and feel that the breast cancer has returned. Appointments for biopsies could not be scheduled since my appointment ended late and those that schedule surgery were gone for the day. Our God is awesome. I know you guys are praying. If the doctors are right and it has returned, let this be a time when God can receive complete glory through my healing.

"O LORD you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago." ~ Isaiah 25:1

July 13, 2010
I just found out that my biopsy, called an EBUS, is scheduled for tomorrow morning. I have to be at UAB at 9:00. Thank you for your continued prayers.

I am quite frustrated. My biopsy has been rescheduled for Friday at 10. I've just got to be patient and wait on God's timing.

July 16, 2010
just returned from UAB. There was nothing in the chest area near my lungs to biopsy! Praise God! 1st hurdle over! Now, the doctors had said that there were other areas they wanted to check out. I have an MRI Tuesday on my pelvic area where another abnormality appeared to see if a biopsy is possible there. Keep praying!

July 20, 2010
I saw a breast cancer specialist today. She examined me and doesn't think anything is wrong with my liver! Woo-hoo!! I have a bone scan next week. Keep praying! God is good!!

July 24, 2010
I have a bone scan at UAB Monday morning at 7:30. It should last about 4 hours. I then have an appointment with my oncologist at 12:20 for the results of that and all the tests I had done this week. Keep the prayers going! Thanks guys!

July 26, 2010
I had my bone scan today and doctor's appointment. She's concerned about the scan. I'm going to an orthopedic surgeon Thursday to see if a biopsy of the bone is feasible. If not, I'll probably wait for 8 weeks and have another bone and CT scan to see if the lesions have grown. If they have, I'll probably start chemo again. Once again, I NEED YOUR PRAYERS!!!

July 29, 2010
I just returned from the doctor. They're going to try to biopsy the sacrum, a lower backbone. We just have to wait for precertification from the insurance company before it can be scheduled. Just keep praying, just keep praying! (To the tune of Dori's swimming from Finding Nemo.)

All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be." ~ Psalm 139: 14-16

August 5, 2010
Thank you everyone for your prayers. I appreciate them SO much! The doctors were able to obtain three tissue samples today. It may be a week before they can tell me anything. Please continue to pray. God has me in the palm of His hands and will take care of me no matter what the outcome. It will be good because it will be His will.

On our way to T-town. David's moving out today. :(

We're back home. David's happy. Yes, I cried.

August 26, 2010
Tomorrow is the 1st. The most difficult part will probably be watching it go into my body. Not looking forward to that. But God will take care of me.

MY DOCTOR'S OFFICE JUST CALLED. A MISTAKE WAS MADE AND I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE TOMORROW. I AM NOT HAPPY!!! I'M NOT GOING TO HAVE A TREATMENT UNTIL NEXT THURSDAY!!!

Chemo tomorrow. Fun, fun, fun! God is good!

September 23, 2010
God is so good. This is the quote that was on my daily calendar (Max Lucado) this morning. "Hang in there. Your time in the desert will pass. Jesus' did." God is so awesome!!!

Thank you everyone for your prayers. I definitely feel them. God is so good. I got home at about 6 tonight and slept until about 8. Neal woke me up for some chicken noodle soup provided by a sweet friend from school. At this point, I feel better than I did last time. Since I was so fatigued after the last treatment, my doctor decreased the dosage. Join me as I pray I'll feel better and for healing. Love you guys!

Treatment tomorrow at 9:30. Fun, fun, fun! Pray, pray, pray!!

October 14, 2010
Home from my treatment. Thanks so much for your prayers. It was a little easier this time. The first week after the treatment has been the toughest so far. Pray that will be easier as well. Tuesday after the treatment has been the toughest day, so pray extra hard Tuesday. God has truly blessed me with you prayer warriors. God has truly blessed me period.

October 16, 2010
Please say an extra prayer for me. I have a lot of trouble sleeping the first few nights after my treatment. This night hasn't been any different.

October 17, 2010
Just got back from the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run. It was awesome! Thanks to all of you who came out to support it or sent prayers. Love you guys!

So, David thinks I'm pretty tough. His latest status? "My mom eats cancer for breakfast."

November 2, 2010
I have a treatment Thursday. I will also have a bone and a CT scan done to see if the tumor has shrunk. Pray, pray, pray!

November 4, 2010
I had the scans done and one of my tumors is shrinking (the one my dr is most concerned about) and two are about the same. My doctor was quite pleased. Praise God through Whom all blessings flow! Since the chemo seems to be doing the job, we will continue treatments for a while. I am so blessed! For some reason, He has chosen to use me in this manner. I only hope that I can glorify Him through it all.

November 30, 2010
is getting ready for another treatment on Thursday! Woo-hoo!

December 2, 2010
I'm home. I have three more scheduled and then I'll start receiving Herceptin indefinitely. I've been getting an injection of Herceptin each time. It's sometimes called breast cancer's miracle drug. Had it been available when I was first diagnosed in 98, my doctor said I'd probably been cured. It doesn't cause the side effects that chemo has. And thank you, my sweet sister Marie Bowen for taking me today!

December 5, 2010
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. ~ Rom. 8:26. Thank You for praying for me Holy Spirit. Sometimes I don't know how right now.

December 26, 2010
I have to be at UAB at 8 in the morning for a treatment. Anyone know how the roads are between Priceville and Birmingham?

December 27, 2010
My treatment went well today. My doctor isn't sure now as to how many more chemo treatments I'll have. The next one has been rescheduled for 1/27. I'll have a CT & MRI scan that day as well. She'll use those results to determine if I'll have a few more or several more treatments. It really depends on how the tumors are responding to the treatments. Pray for me. That's not what I wanted to hear.

"You're a miracle."

Today was a good day. Fantastic, actually. I spent it at UAB--not my place of choice, but I received really good news. Neal and I had to be at the Kirklin Clinic by 8:00 for my MRI, followed by blood work, and two different doctor appointments. No, that doesn't sound like a wonderful day, but the final results made it a great day. I saw my breast cancer specialist first. She didn't order the MRI but said she had reviewed it and it looked good to her--no new lesions and everything's stable. She said she had been really worried about me for a while but is extremely happy with how things are going now. Next, I saw my brain cancer specialist. He entered the room and gave me a hug. He's amazed. He said, "I've never had a patient do this well for this long after brain metastasis. You're a miracle."

Yes. God is in the miracle business. I know my faith in Him is key to my recovery. He's the Great Physician and will heal me one way or another. As a matter of fact, I'm already healed. I already have eternal life with Him. Cancer has nothing on my God! I know too that He listens to the prayers of His saints. That's all of you guys! You've faithfully prayed for me and I can't even begin to thank you enough. One day, according to Revelation 5:8, you'll see how He has collected all your prayers like we collect artwork from our kids and grandkids.

On another note, we rescued a dog! Her name is Maggie, and she's already spoiled. Although I love dogs, I was really hesitant about getting one because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to give her the attention she needs when Neal isn't home. However, four years ago, Rachel got a dog that we kept a lot and I realized that I could. We don't keep Josie much any more and Rachel really encouraged me to get one of my own. She's been so good for me! And yes, I love her to pieces. Check out the pics.

"The righteous care for the needs of their animals." ~ Proverbs 12:10a
(See! There's a verse for everything! 😊)

Rescued!

Play time!

Hallelujah to the Great I AM!!

Excruciating Pain

I was hesitant to share this, but then I did a devotion on intercessory prayer, including asking others for prayer for yourself. Is that a God thing or what?

I've been in a lot of pain. I had a really bad headache all last week. It went away for a couple of days but returned. Usually, after I have a headache as bad as the one I had last week, it won't return with such intensity for at least another week or two. This time, it was only gone for a few days. It's absolutely excruciating. The pain is primarily located in my neck and head and is worse around my right ear, the back of my head, and both sides of my neck. It's so bad that it's making me nauseous.

I know many of you pray for me, and I can't even begin to tell you how thankful I am for you. I also know that you want me to be specific in my requests, so here you go. I love and appreciate you all so much. ❤🙏🏻

God is in the details

God is in the details. He's never far away. If we don't see Him, we're not paying attention.

I have new news that's really old news--I just didn't know about it. If I had, my attitude over the last nine years might have been different. Oh, I believe I would have praised Him and been as accepting as I have been, but I might have been more despondent.

During my last visit to Dr. Boggs (the brain specialist), Neal and I found out about a tumor on my spine that we didn't know about but had been there all along. He mentioned it as if we already knew about it. It's located on the T9 vertebra, which is in the middle of my back. I remember Dr. Falkson (the breast cancer specialist) talking about the T9 tumor, but I thought she was referring to the one on my sacrum. It didn't occur to me that it was a different tumor. I compared the latest CT results with the earliest results I have on hand. It's been there all along. There's also one on my hip bone that I didn't know about. It makes sense now as to why I have so much hip and back pain.

God is in the details. I realize each day how blessed I am to still be here. I realize that even more now. I have tumors on my hip bone, tail bone, spine, right lung, and two in my brain (one behind my right ear and one on the left side of the back of my head). God is so good. He knew neither Neal nor I would have handled all that information very well if we had known it from the beginning. Neal especially. You know how it is. It's one thing when you're sick; it's quite another when those you love are sick.

Rachel asked me if I feel more despondent now that I know. I don't. I actually feel a bit relieved. I've been wondering why I have so much back and hip pain. Now I know.

God is in the details. He loves me beyond measure. I will remain in this world until I have completed His plan for my earthly life. He won't be finished with me because I have an eternity to work for Him, and I can't wait. For now, I enjoy spending time with my sweet granddaughter, my children, and my wonderfully supportive husband. I also enjoy singing praises to Him everyday. He is the great I AM and it's absolutely amazing that He loves me enough to spare me from information overload. My doctors have told me about the tumors all along; I just wasn't ready to hear it.

God is in the details. He loves you more than you can possibly imagine. Don't miss out on the greatest love of all time.

Spring is coming! I always think of my Mama and Daddy when I see buttercups. He picked them for her every year.

Flood

Before I begin writing the main portion of this entry, let me say Thank you! God hears our prayers. The cancer is still stable! Hallelujah! There was a concern since I've been experiencing new symptoms, but everything's good! It's nice to hear one of your doctors say that he tells my story a lot!

Yes, He hears us. I am so blessed. My life has been challenging when it comes to health, but I thank Him for that challenge. I wouldn't be who I am, and my children wouldn't be who they are without it. They've seen my struggles and it has made them strong. Rachel was only four and David was eight when I was originally diagnosed. That's all they've ever known.

Yesterday was quite a long day, but God placed people in my path with whom to share and to minister. My day began with a CT scan. The lady who was registering me for the scan was quite the Christian. We practically had church! It started when she asked me about the drive to UAB since we're supposed to get a torrential downpour for most of this week. She then mentioned how this was all prophesied, and I talked about the birth pains the Earth is experiencing. We shared about His goodness and how He's giving us so many chances to come to Him. This awful weather our planet is experiencing was all prophesied in the Bible thousands of years ago. Don't miss that. We just have to look up and see His goodness. Why is He allowing all of this bad weather and all of the bad things that are happening in the world? He told us in His Word that it would. One reference (among many) is Luke 21:10-11. Jesus is speaking, "Then He told them, 'Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places, along with fearful sights and great signs from heaven.'" He wants us to see how truthful and merciful and good He is. Good? How is this good? According to 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." He wants us to see how His prophecies are being fulfilled and return to Him. He has so much love for us. "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him," Psalm 103:11. Here's another from Psalm 139:17-18. "How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with You."

I was also able to minister to a lady in the MRI waiting room. She was diagnosed with breast cancer last week and was quite scared. I shared a little about my story--how I was diagnosed in 1998, it returned in 2010, and how my doctor told me it probably would not have returned if I had a particular treatment that is available now that wasn't then. I also shared how I had grown closer to God throughout the experience. She had questions, and I answered the best that I could. I focused on the positives. Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." That includes cancer! He's got this!

Many would look at my life and feel sorry for me. Don't! I feel so blessed! Because of the pain and suffering I have experienced, I have grown closer to our precious Jesus. "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus," Philippians 4:7. I have this peace! It's absolutely amazing! Do I feel it all the time? No! I cry out "Oh woe is me" with the best of them!  But I always come back to His amazing love and mercy. He is so good! I am flooded with His love and mercy!

With all the rain we're having, the song "Flood" by Jars of Clay has been stuck in my head. It is also relevant to my story as well as to so many others.

Here's a picture, just for fun. I'm also blessed with a wonderful husband. 😊

So Blessed

Thank you so much for all of your continued prayers. I haven't written in my blog in a while and thought this was the time.

I feel so blessed. When I stop to think about the cancer that I have, where it's located, and the usual prognosis with this type of cancer, I am humbled to think God is allowing me to remain here.

Humbled? Why humbled? He's not through with me! So many have passed with this diagnosis, yet here I am. He must want to use me in some capacity. I pray I will glorify Him, choose life, and allow His Spirit to permeate through me.

One part of going to UAB that is so challenging is seeing all of the people who are suffering. There are so many. The waiting room is always full of patients. There is just so much pain and suffering in this world. If only everyone could know the Answer that I know. God is so good. Yes, I have cancer. Yes, others have it too and many have problems astronomically larger than mine. Jesus provides such comfort and relief. There's just no way to adequately describe what He does for me and for all who have accepted Him as Savior. Yes, I struggle physically and emotionally as well; however, I have an inner peace that simply cannot be described. His love is so immense and no matter what I do or fail to do, He will not love me any more or less that what He does now. I can't disappoint Him because He already knows what I'm going to do. There are no surprises for Him. He's got me in the Palm of His Hands, and one day I'll get to touch those precious Hands! Oh what a day that will be! And oh how I love Jesus!

All is vanity and a chasing after wind

"All is vanity and a chasing after wind."
~ Ecclesiastes 1:14

I've come to really appreciate these words. When I was younger, I really didn't understand what they meant. But now, I think about the words we say and the things we post on social media. Even when I'm posting about how I'm feeling and asking for prayer--am I asking for His glory, or my own? I really want all I do and say to be for His glory, but I'm sure there are those who are reading this who think that I'm still after my own. Am I? I certainly hope not. This life is about Him, and I choose to glorify Him through it all. However, am I being vain by posting this in the first place? When I look deep inside, I really don't think I am. I don't want the focus to be on me; I want it on Him. I am no longer physically able to do a lot for Him, but I can speak up and let others know what He's done for me.

I've had a rough few days. I haven't been able to eat much and have been in pain. But He's got this. He is the maker of the universe and the master of all time. He already sees me as healed because I'm already there with Him in His realm of time. So for now, I must focus on that and continue to glorify Him. If the trials that I'm enduring in this life can bring one soul to Him, then it's oh so worth it. I really want everyone to know the joy I have in Him. There is no peace without Him. There is no joy without Him. Happiness is fleeting. It depends on circumstances. Joy is continual. He's got this. Joy doesn't just come in the morning; it's here today. We just have to know in Whom to find it.

"All is vanity and a chasing after wind."
How ridiculous to chase after the wind! There is no way to catch it, just as there is no way to satisfy our lives by chasing trivial things. We must run to Jesus. He's all there is.
